On This Day … in 1857 & Others

Lieutenant William Alexander Kerr of the 24th Bombay Native Infantry won the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny. The 27th Bombay N.I. mutinied in July 1857, and a large body of them made for the stronghold of Kolapore, midway between Belgaum and Satara. Lieutenant Kerr, then Adjutant of the Southern Mahratta Horse, quickly followed them up for eighty miles. On reaching the mutineers place of defence, he with a few of his men, made a dash at the gate and broke it down. All within it were
