Martha Dandridge was born on June 2, 1731, near Williamsburg , Virginia, the daughter of Frances Jones Dandridge and Colonel John Dandridge, a wealthy planter. Growing up, she learned to manage a large household and entertain guests, to play the spinet and ride horseback. Once she rode her horse into her uncle.
